Squid Game is the first foreign-language TV nominee at the SAG Awards.

At the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Netflix’s blockbuster original program “Squid Game” made history by becoming the first non-English-language series and the first Korean series to receive a nomination. “Squid Game” is competing for best drama series cast, against “Succession,” “Yellowstone,” “The Morning Show,” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The show was also nominated for best drama series actor (Lee Jung-jae), best drama series actress (Jung Ho-yeon), and best stunt ensemble.

“Squid Game” has become a global hit after its premiere on Netflix in September 2021. The drama surpassed “Bridgerton” as the most-watched Netflix original series in history with 1.65 billion hours of streaming in its first four weeks of availability. The show won three Golden Globes, including best television drama and best supporting actor for O Yeong-su. “Squid Game” has also received three Critics Choice Award nominations and a Gotham Award for best new series.

The success of the program has spurred debate over the formation of future seasons. Though Dong-hyuk previously said season 1 “could be good closure for the whole story,” he is also aware that it “ended in an open-ended way.”

“There are some other stories in the series that have not been addressed. For example, the story of the police officer and the story of his brother, The Front Man,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in October. “So if I end up creating season 2, I’d like to explore that storyline — what is going on between those two brothers? And then I could also go into the story of that recruiter in the suit who plays the game of ddakji with Gi-hun and gives him the card in the first episode.”

The director added, “And, of course, we could go with Gi-hun’s story as he turns back, and explore more about how he’s going to navigate through his reckoning with the people who are designing the games.”

Dong-hyuk recently informed the Associated Press that he is “in the planning process” of creating a second Squid Game season. According to the Korea Times, he then revealed last month to Korean network KBS that he is “in talks with Netflix over season 2 as well as season 3.”

The 28th SAG Awards ceremony will telecast on TNT and TBS on February 27 at 5 p.m. (Pacific). The show’s host has yet to be named, and it will be televised from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.
