Rings Of Power Season 2 Adds Major Elf Character Who Opposes Sauron

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings Of Power season 2 adds an exciting new character to its ensemble in the form of Círdan, a powerful Elf who opposes Sauron. Taking place thousands of years before the events of Peter Jackson’s acclaimed The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Prime Video’s The Rings of Power chronicles the rise of dark forces in Middle-earth during the Second Age. Despite being somewhat divisive among fans, the show has been a hit with critics thus far, who praise its world-building and impressive visual scale.

Since the show takes place in an entirely new time period from Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movies, the series consists mostly of characters audiences have not seen before in live action, even if they are present in J.R.R Tolkien’s source material. While Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo) have been seen before, other characters like Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker), Adar (Joseph Mawle), Nori (Markella Kavenagh), Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards), Prince Durin (Owain Arthur), Bronwyn (Nazanin Boniadi), and Halbrand (Charlie Vickers), among others, will be new to viewers of The Rings of Power. Now 6 episodes into season 1, The Rings of Power has already been confirmed to return for four additional seasons.

Per a new report from THR, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to add another important character to its already large ensemble for season 2. Following the announcement that season 2 starts production in the UK this week, it’s been revealed that Círdan will play a role in the upcoming season. The role hasn’t been cast just yet, but the character plays an important part in the fight against Sauron in Tolkien’s source material.

What We Know About LOTR’s Cirdan

During the Second Age, when The Rings of Power takes place, Círdan is said to be the oldest Elf living in Middle-earth, in addition to being one of the wisest. The character advises Celebrimbor and the Eregion Elves against the creation of the Rings of Power, but his advice falls on deaf ears. After being bestowed one of the Rings of Power himself, Círdan plays an important role in defeating Sauron in the Third Age, fighting as part of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, which sees the Dark Lord’s physical form defeated.

Although not depicted in the prologue of Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, Círdan joined Elrond to plead that Isildur destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom. These later events of Círdan’s life are unlikely to be depicted in The Rings of Power considering the show takes place in the Second Age, but it’s likely that the Lord of the Rings character will play an important role when it comes to the creation of the Rings of Power themselves. With production now underway on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2, it’s likely that an announcement regarding Círdan’s casting is on the horizon.
