Hilary Swank says she hasn’t been asked to reprise her role as The Next Karate Kid‘s Julie Pierce in Cobra Kai. Released in 1994, The Next Karate Kid was the fourth installment of the famed Karate Kid franchise and saw Swank step in as Julie Pierce, Mr. Miyagi’s (Pat Morita) new pupil after Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio).
Set three decades after the events of 1984’s The Karate Kid, Cobra Kai has reignited interest in the franchise and featured the return of several Karate Kid veterans, including Elizabeth Shu as Ali Mills, Yuji Okumoto as Chozen, and Sean Kanan as Mike Barnes. After Cobra Kai transitioned to Netflix for its third season, fans of the franchise voiced their opinions that Swank should return as Julie Pierce in the series. Starring Macchio, William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence, Mary Mouser, Xolo Maridueña, Peyton List, and Tanner Buchanan, Cobra Kai season 5 highlighted the return of villain Terry Silver and the aftermath of season 4’s All-Valley Tournament.
Now, the Oscar-winning actress explains why Julie hasn’t appeared in Cobra Kai yet. Speaking with Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest on Live with Kelly and Ryan (via People), Swank reveals Cobra Kai hasn’t asked her to be a part of the show. Swank, who has previously sidestepped the question of her return to the role in the past, confirmed her lack of appearance has been due to not getting a call. However, Swank didn’t disclose if she would accept the offer to return even if she was asked. Check out what Swank said below:
I’m not in Cobra Kai, no one’s asked me to be in Cobra Kai. A lot of people ask if I’m going to be on it, it’s like, the No. 1 question I get. No one’s called me! But it’s so funny, isn’t it, that’s the one thing I get asked the most and no one’s called me.
Could Julie Pierce Appear In Cobra Kai Season 6?
Indeed, each season of Cobra Kai continues to top its predecessors by peppering in original cast members of The Karate Kid franchise and unveiling major plot twists. While it remains to be seen if Cobra Kai season 6 will feature a time jump, the new installment could set the stage to bring back Swank as Julie Pierce. Cobra Kai season 5 introduced Silver’s lethal colleague Kim Da-Eun (Alicia Hannah-Kim), and Julie could prove her match in terms of skill. Of course, Julie Pierce is considered part of the Miyagi-verse, and Mr. Miyagi’s teachings are the running theme of Cobra Kai.
For now, viewers will have to wait and see if Swank as Julie will join forces with Daniel, Johnny, and the new generation of karate students to bring the Karate Kid universe full circle. Karate Kid fans have been interested to see how Julie applied Mr. Miyagi’s teachings to her life, and what her appearance in the show would mean for Daniel and Johnny’s complicated dynamic. Cobra Kai season 6 has yet to be confirmed by Netflix, but the next installment could take the local saga to an international level while featuring the return of Swank as Julie Pierce.
