With a few names curiously absent from its announcement, creator Dan Harmon has shared a promising update on Donald Glover’s Community return. The Golden Globe and Emmy winner starred in the beloved NBC sitcom as Troy Barnes, a former star high school quarterback who heads to Greendale Community College after losing his football scholarship from an injury involving a keg stand. Though initially distant from the study group, Troy slowly warms up to his cohorts, becoming especially close friends with Danny Pudi’s Abed.
After having been canceled at NBC, Yahoo! Screen brought Community back for season 6, which would initially bring the show to a close, though audiences held out hope for a movie after its long-running joke of “six seasons and a movie.” Harmon teased plans for a Community movie in the years since the show ended, with Peacock finally greenlighting the film this past September with original stars Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong all being confirmed to return. Fans of the show were quick to notice a few names missing from the roster of the film, but an update from its creator may be able to breathe a sigh of relief soon.
In a recent interview with Variety, Dan Harmon opened up about Donald Glover’s potential Community movie return. The show’s creator acknowledged the Troy actor’s absence from the casting announcement, explaining that it largely came down to his deal still being in the works and confirming he’s working to bring Glover back. See what Harmon shared below:
I think that Donald is coming, based on word of mouth, but it’s just the deal isn’t official or wasn’t official. It would be difficult to really commit to doing this thing without Donald. So I believe he is coming back. I think if there’s names missing from a list, it’s because the names that are on the list, their deals are agreed upon enough that it’s OK to say they are on the list, and anybody that’s not on a list, it’s just not the case yet. So there is nothing official about anybody being out.
Glover’s Troy had departed in Community season 5, with the actor citing personal reasons for his leaving the show and later expressing his desire to work on projects that allotted him more independence. Though having turned down her return for season 6, Harmon’s confirmation that talks are ongoing to bring Glover back for the Community movie is sure to keep anticipation high for its development, namely as the show’s creator remains committed to bringing him back. It should be noted that with Glover’s busy schedule on a variety of projects, including Disney+’s Lando Calrissian series, negotiations could still ultimately fall through, but Harmon’s passion could inspire Glover’s interest to come back.
With Harmon noting that any unannounced actors for the Community movie are likely still in negotiations to come back, this should come as a promising sign for Shirley actor Yvette Nicole Brown to also potentially return to the fold. In his post celebrating the film’s announcement, McHale tagged Brown among the rest of the cast both announced and unannounced, including Donald Glover, seemingly indicating she is also in talks to return. While audiences await proper confirmations on Glover and Brown’s potential returns, they can revisit the entirety of Community streaming on Netflix.
