Baby Driver star Eiza González addresses the rumor that she will be appearing in the MCU series Daredevil: Born Again as the character Elektra.
The actress rumored to be taking over the role of Elektra in Daredevil: Born Again has addressed whether or not she will be participating in the series. The upcoming Disney+ series results from a complicated branch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Netflix series Daredevil, starring Charlie Cox as the blind vigilante lawyer Matt Murdock, was the first series in the Defenders universe, which was loosely in continuity with the MCU and included shows like Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. The shows made their Disney+ debut earlier this year after being removed from Netflix. Daredevil has slowly been introduced into the MCU proper with a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, an appearance by villain Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) in Hawkeye, and the announcement that a new series titled Daredevil: Born Again would be coming soon.
This summer, the rumor surfaced that Daredevil: Born Again would be casting Baby Driver and Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw actress Eiza González as Elektra. The character, an ex-girlfriend of Matt Murdock who brings chaos and danger into his life, originally appeared on the Netflix series as played by Élodie Yung. The rumors of this recasting began to swirl as fans debated how much of the original Netflix series was genuinely in continuity with the canon of the MCU and whether certain details of that storyline would be changing.
On her official Twitter account today, González addressed the rumors of her Daredevil: Born Again casting. She said she’s “just gonna get it out of the way” because she was getting a lot of “hate over this,” as Elektra is a Greek character and González is a Mexican actress. She officially revealed that she would not participate in Daredevil due to her contractual commitments to the upcoming Netflix series adapted from the Liu Cixin sci-fi novel The Three-Body Problem. What We Know About the Daredevil Cast So Far
Part of the reason that rumors have become so virulent around Daredevil: Born Again is that most of the details of the series are being kept tightly under wraps. So far, Cox and D’Onofrio are the only two actors who have been officially confirmed for the series, reprising their original roles. None of the other main cast of the Netflix series, including Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), have been confirmed to return.
Whether Daredevil: Born Again will bring back any more actors from the original series remains to be seen. However, it seems likely that any returning characters would be played by the original actors, considering the MCU’s approach to folding in the Netflix series thus far. There is also a chance that Alaqua Cox could be reprising her role of Echo, Fisk’s protege who was introduced in Hawkeye, though that has not been officially confirmed either.
