Andor Episode 5’s Indiana Jones Easter Egg Explained

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Andor episode 5.Episode 5 of the Star Wars series Andor contains another Indiana Jones Easter egg, continuing a long-running trend of mutual references between the two franchises. Star Wars and Indiana Jones were both the brainchild of George Lucas, and they also both star Harrison Ford — as Han Solo in the former and as the titular archeologist in the latter. Naturally, the connection between the two has led to various references and Easter eggs in official and unofficial franchise entries.

By the end of Andor season 1, episode 5, “The Axe Forgets,” Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and his team are preparing to launch their heist at an Imperial facility on Aldhani. Meanwhile, Luthan Rael (Stellan Skarsgård) awaits word from the team back in his antique shop on Coruscant. Andor episode 4 already revealed Indiana Jones’s whip encased in carbonite as one of the items in Luthan’s collection, but it’s not the only link back to the Indiana Jones movies found in his collection.

As Luthan paces the backroom of his shop at the end of Andor episode 5, the Sankara Stones can clearly be seen on a shelf behind him. These fictional magical stones were said to be gifted to the Hindu priest of the same name by the goddess Shiva, who wished him to fight evil with them. The Sankara Stones were the MacGuffin in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which, in turn, just so happened to feature a Star Wars reference.

Andor Continues Star Wars & Indiana Jones’ Long Crossover History

The presence of the Sankara Stones in Luthan’s collection in Andor episode 5 recalls Indiana and the Temple of Doom‘s Shanghai-set opening sequence, in which Indiana Jones, Willie, and Short Round are involved in a battle for their lives with Chinese gangsters in the Club Obi Wan, named after Star Wars‘ Jedi Master. This wasn’t the first Star Wars reference in the Indiana Jones franchise either, as a hieroglyph of R2-D2 and C-3PO can briefly be seen halfway through Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The latest Andor reference, in season 1, episode 5, continues four decades of references between the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises. The Headpiece to the Staff of Ra from Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Crystal Skull from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull appeared in episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. And the Holy Grail from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade features in the Andor-adjacent show Star Wars: Rebels, specifically in season 3, episode 17, “Through Imperial Eyes.” Solo: A Star Wars Story also inserted a few Indiana Jones Easter eggs, most notably the Chachapoyan fertility idol from the opening of Raiders of the Lost Ark, which can be seen in the office of Dryden Vos.

As well as continuing tradition, it also makes sense for Andor to reference the Indiana Jones movies because Cassian Andor and Han Solo are very similar figures — mercenaries with hearts of gold. With the fifth Indiana Jones movie due out in theaters in 2023, and more Star Wars projects in development, it’s likely that these two Disney-owned Lucasfilm franchises will continue to cross over in years to come.

New episodes of Andor release on Wednesdays on Disney+.
